Lake Malawi Projects (LMP) is a rural development organisation which works in Likoma District, Malawi.

LMPs primary aim is to enable local communities to improve their standard of living and help them address the causes of poverty. We employ a holistic district-wide development strategy comprising programmes to improve agricultural productivity, reduce the impact of HIV/Aids, and to address the skills shortage. User-participation and collaboration with local Malawian bodies is a key aspect of our work. The field work of LMP is managed through a registered  NGO in Malawi, which employs six workers, with a six person Executive Committee to direct and monitor activities. The population of Likoma district is 13,000 and average household household income for the region per year is $700. Aids is a major problem with 14% of the population HIV positive. Life expectancy is 37. Formal employment is less than 5% of the working age population.
Agriculture:
Since 2004 LMP has conducted a district wide agricultural programme. Using demonstration gardens and monthly open day training events local agricultural output has increased from 5% of all needs to 30% in 2010. Soil erosion  and fertility remain major challenges to further increase productivity...More
Aids:
HIV positive rates, based on over 6000 tests conducted by LMP, showed a 14% incidence of Aids between 2005-08. In the last two years the  average positive test rate has fallen sharply to less than 6%. This is testament to the HIV awareness, and behavioral change programme that LMP conducts.  More
Education:
Computers were introduced to the district in early 2004 but no training was provided. LMP runs a computer training programme for workers, and provides classes to primary students at its computer centre ...More
Vocational Training: Vocational training is a key way in which to boost employment and services. LMP has trained over 40 carpenters, boat builders, tin smiths and brick layers in the past. Many of those trained now conduct their own business whilst past trainees now operate a joinery business from LMP premises ...More

NEW PROJECT  -   Check Dams:
Soil erosion is a major problem in Likoma District especially in the south of Likoma Island. In 2009 LMP constructed 100 small dams to prevent run-off. In 2011-13 LMP is embarking on a program to build 100 larger dams to prevent further erosion and reclaim agricultural land for the future...More
